Minister Rachmat Airs Support for Strengthening of National Defense Industry

During a working visit to West Java, Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Rachmat Pambudy inspected PT Pindad (Persero) to review the progress of Indonesia’s defense industry and discuss strategies for achieving self-reliance in defense equipment production ahead of the Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision.

Minister Rachmat underscored the strategic importance of the defense industry in advancing the nation across multiple sectors. “No country achieves advanced status without a strong defense industry. This sector not only ensures national security but also serves as a strategic investment that protects national wealth and supports other sectors, such as agriculture, which can gain greater value through robust defense-based technologies,” he stated on Friday (15/11).

The government’s commitment to the national defense industry is evident through supportive regulations and increased budgets for domestic products. With the enactment of Law No. 59/2024 on the 2025-2045 National Long-Term Development Plan, the government is dedicated to building a healthy, independent, and globally competitive defense sector.

One key initiative is the *spend to invest* policy, requiring foreign defense companies to invest in Indonesia when their products are procured. These investments may take the form of production facilities, joint manufacturing ventures, or Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services established in Indonesia. PT Pindad has developed several high-quality defense systems, including the Harimau tank, Anoa armored personnel carrier, and Maung tactical vehicle, the latter used directly by President Prabowo. The national defense industry also contributes to economic growth by reducing import dependency and creating jobs. In 2023, Defence Industry Indonesia (DEFEND ID) reported revenues surpassing those of Turkey’s Roketsan, reflecting the success of policies favoring domestic products.

Minister Rachmat expressed optimism that the defense industry could drive Indonesia’s economic growth toward achieving 0% poverty and an 8% economic growth rate.

“To achieve self-sufficiency in food, energy, and water, technology must play a central role. Through its technological innovations, Pindad can support various sectors—including food, health, and energy—contributing to the realization of a resilient Indonesia by 2045,” he concluded.
