Compulsory Curriculum Textbook on Citizenship Education Integrates Material on Population Administration

JAKARTA – The Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, and the Ministry of Home Affairs, launched a textbook for the mandatory curriculum course in Citizenship Education (MKWK) that integrates civil registration and population administration, on Monday (14/10). This textbook is the result of cross-ministerial collaboration and is part of the national strategy to accelerate civil registration and population administration.

"This launch is a significant step in the national strategy implementation, particularly in raising awareness and encouraging active participation among the Indonesian population. The textbook will be used in higher education, integrating concepts of population registration and civil records into the curriculum. Cooperation between various stakeholders is essential, including support from development partners like UNICEF Indonesia, Puskapa UI, and Vital Strategies," said Maliki, Deputy for Population and Employment at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas.

Law No. 12/2012 on Higher Education mandates that universities must offer courses in Religion, Pancasila, Citizenship, and the Indonesian Language. These courses, though independent, are complementary and supportive, containing relevant and contextual content aimed at shaping the character and civility of students. Citizenship Education, one of the four mandatory national courses, plays a vital role in fostering a sense of national pride and love for the homeland among young citizens. Through this course, students are expected to grasp the concepts and importance of identity, integration, the constitution, citizenship, democracy, law, the archipelagic insight, and national resilience.

The launch of this textbook marks an important step in the early dissemination of the new curriculum. The material on population registration and civil records, inserted into the Citizenship Education textbook, aims to increase the awareness and active participation of all Indonesian citizens, especially students, in recording population events and vital occurrences. Additionally, the textbook includes examples of citizenship projects in each chapter to promote active learning through project-based learning and problem-based learning models.

"We hope this textbook significantly enhances public awareness of the importance of civil registration. Regular evaluations and monitoring will be conducted to ensure its effective implementation in the field," concluded Deputy Maliki.
