Bappenas & Pertamina Strengthen Energy Security Through Strategic Collaboration

JAKARTA – The world is currently grappling with a triple planetary crisis involving climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. The World Economic Forum's 2023 Global Risks Report states that this crisis is a moment to accelerate the energy transition towards a green economy. Energy transition is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 70 percent by 2050. However, Indonesia faces the challenge of an energy trilemma in achieving national energy independence.

"The energy needs cannot be met with business-as-usual methods, but must align with concerns over the triple planetary crisis. Today, oil and natural gas still play a significant role as our primary energy sources, with oil at 30 percent and natural gas at 16 percent, but it seems we rely solely on these. Therefore, the development of oil and gas in the future needs innovation on how we can produce low-emission energy," said the Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Suharso Monoarfa during the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Cooperation Agreement (PKS) with PT Pertamina (Persero) on Monday (10/6).

The energy trilemma refers to energy resilience, affordability, and sustainability. The World Energy Council's report (2024) shows that countries successfully managing energy resilience are those balancing these three aspects of the energy trilemma. This means energy resilience strategy should not only focus on economic and technical aspects but also consider long-term environmental impacts.

Nicke Widyawati, CEO of PT Pertamina (Persero), also emphasized the importance of sustainability in their collaboration. "I appreciate that we are not only aligning with the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) and the National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN), but there is also a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) focusing on implementation. It's not just policy alignment; we are actively involved in implementing these policy plans," said Nicke.

"I also want to commend Pertamina for establishing Pertamina Sustainability Expert as an education and training hub, and today we will sign this collaboration, primarily to strengthen energy resilience, accelerate environmentally friendly oil and gas downstream activities, and promise prosperity," added Suharso. This PKS underscores the importance of integrating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into Pertamina's business processes, realized through Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) implementation and integrated SDGs within Pertamina Sustainability Expert. To enhance efficiency and sustainable innovation, this collaboration also includes technology utilization and human resource quality improvement.

"This marks the beginning of our journey together, which we will detail into concrete steps that can realize and accelerate job creation, thereby boosting Indonesia's GDP and guiding us towards Indonesia Emas 2045," Nicke concluded.
