Green South Alliance: An Indonesia-South Asia Collaboration to Strengthen Energy Transition Efforts

JAKARTA – To address energy challenges and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in South Asia and Indonesia, the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN)/Bappenas, in collaboration with Swaniti Global and the Green South Alliance – Energy Transition (Indonesia Chapter), discussed efforts and best practices in South Asia and Indonesia for advancing energy transition toward a sustainable and equitable energy future.

"Energy transition is not only crucial for mitigating climate change but also for ensuring energy security and sustaining economic growth," explained Deputy Minister of National Development Planning/Deputy Head of Bappenas, Febrian Alphyanto Ruddyard, during The Green South Alliance – Energy Transition Convening event in Jakarta on Thursday (28/11).

Deputy for Maritime and Natural Resources Affairs at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, Vivi Yulaswati, elaborated on the concept of the Energy Trilemma, which highlights three main challenges in energy transition. First, security, to ensure energy supply security in each country. Second, equity, to guarantee that the growing global population has access to affordable energy. Third, sustainability, to promote the sustainable and equitable use of energy.

An Indian parliamentary representative who attended the event also emphasized that tackling the challenges of energy transition is a shared responsibility. Rwitwika Bhattacharya, CEO of Swaniti Global, underscored the importance of this alliance. “The goal of this alliance is to explore how countries can support each other, how we can become allies in the global South to truly drive innovation,” said Rwitwika Bhattacharya.

This multi-stakeholder agenda produced several key takeaways, including the need to increase climate financing, establish knowledge-sharing platforms, and strengthen policy frameworks. The Green South Alliance is committed to developing a roadmap for future partnerships and advancing efforts to ensure a fair and sustainable energy transition across the region.
