Bappenas Discusses Urban Transformation Towards Global City Goal at Monash University Indonesia

The Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) organized a talk show themed “Transformation Towards Global Cities” as part of the 2024 World Town Planning Day celebration series at Monash University Indonesia on Friday (11/15).

This collaboration highlights a strong commitment to delivering inclusive urban governance solutions that not only address urban challenges but also maximize economic and socio-cultural potential.

“Here, we aim to discuss and identify the key features of global cities that we need to achieve together. Transforming a city into a global city encompasses not only physical changes but also shifts in values and identity. Of course, this effort cannot be undertaken by the government alone; it also involves academics, entrepreneurs, and communities. We hope this discussion fosters innovative collaboration to build resilient and sustainable cities,” explained Agung Dorodjatoen, Coordinator for Urban Affairs at the Directorate of Regional Development at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas.

Against the backdrop of rapid urbanization trends, this event is expected to serve as a platform to discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by cities in Indonesia in their transformation into global cities. The concept of a global city highlighted in this discussion reflects a highly competitive metropolitan area with a modern economy, supported by international-scale public facilities and shopping centers. A global city is not only viewed as an economic hub but also as an inclusive living space capable of embracing diversity, creativity, and innovation.

The discussion aims to formulate solutions and inspirations that can be applied to cities across Indonesia so they can actively participate in the global network. “Participants in this talk show are not only from the general public but also key planners from various ministries. It is hoped that after this event, they can become agents of change, disseminating their experiences and knowledge to develop cities towards global city status,” Agung concluded.
